No matter how good of a golfer you are, you're always going to miss both left and right of your target.
So when faced with a difficult pin placement that's guarded by water, it's best to aim for the center of the green, or away from the water.
In the hypothetical scenario below, aiming directly at the pin would have resulted in 3 out of 8 shots in the water. However, by simply aiming for the center of the green, no balls would have ended up in the water using the same shot dispersion.
Remember: It's better to be on the green and slightly further from the pin than risk going for a swim!
