Contrary to what some people think, making more birdies isn't what's necessary to improve your handicap.
According to data from Arccos, a 5 handicap golfer only averages 1.2 birdies per round while a 15 handicap golfer averages 0.5 birdies per round. So the difference between the two is less than one birdie per round!
But you know what does separate low handicap golfers from high handicap golfers?
A lack of double and triple bogeys.
As you can see from the table below, 15 handicap golfers average 4.2 double bogeys or worse per round. Meanwhile, 5 handicap golfers are only averaging 1.6 double bogeys or worse per round.
So if you're trying to lower your scores and improve your handicap, there's no need to play overly aggressive and chase birdies. Instead, your main priority should be to minimize double bogeys and the colossal numbers on your scorecard.
